Liquorice extracts guaranteed matrine-free: We have the solution

Why Matrine-free?

Matrine is used as a natural pesticide in Southeast Asia. It comes from the Sophora plant, which visually resembles the liquorice plant (*Glycyrrhiza glabra*) and often grows in its vicinity. As liquorice roots are harvested in the wild and there are no pure plantations for it, sometimes Sophora plants are also harvested. As a result, matrine can end up in the liquorice extract.
Matrine is not used as a pesticide in Europe. Its presence in food products and their raw materials has been banned in the EU and Switzerland since July 2021. This means that liquorice extracts containing matrine must be avoided at all costs. If liquorice containing matrine is detected in the EU or Switzerland, the Rapid Alert System for Food (RASFF) is activated for a recall.
How can you be sure that your liquorice extract is matrine-free?

  • MAFCO/EVD: This manufacturer, exclusively represented by SUGRO AG for the Swiss, Liechtenstein and German markets, is the only one to have implemented a process that excludes raw materials containing matrine.
  • Quality assurance: Every production batch is tested for the absence of matrine and documented by certificates of analysis.
